Spacecraft is a Dublin-based collective, a vehicle for exploring a range of different arts, crafts and trades combined in unorthodox ways. The group was formed as a response to a growing need for available and non-commercially organised space for a wide variety of cultural exploits. We see the importance of creative and unapologetic use of public and waste space to reintroduce direct and people-based culture, street theatre, oration visual arts etc. We lament the encouragement of numb and passive consumer- orientated forms of entertainment and the allocation of art into narrowly defined spaces medias and functions. We endeavour to challenge the attempts of town planning and corporate enterprise to synthesize a modern street culture suitable to business interests, as it curtails the individuals right to free movement and the inspired use of so-called public space. We recommend the conscious nurturing of the imagination as an important part of encouraging greater individual freedom and empowerment and would like to see a revival and reinvention of pageantry, carnival and traditional forms of positive deviance and "everyman`s expression" and entertainment such as the caberet, fairground, burlesque etc. We also aim to encourage new attitudes to space availability and rights. We propose that our dependance and immersion in local environment, an environment that is often ugly and outside our power to affect, is a source of soul suffering and stress and breeds a culture of lethargy and random violence. Instead of anodyne tidytown measures, we would like to see direct, dynamic and creative responses to the prevailing visual pollution of corporate city scapes. In our ventures, we aim to create stimulating and startling environments that encourage prescence of mind and active participation as well as fuel our imaginations and dreams. |
